How to play 8-Ball Pool
The goal
Eight numbered balls are racked in a triangle on a full-size pool table. Your job is simple to say and tricky to master: sink every ball into one of the six pockets using the white cue ball, in as few shots as possible. There is no opponent and no timer โ just you, the table, and your shot count. A low score means a smooth, confident player.
Controls
- Aim: move your mouse or slide your finger across the table โ a dotted guide line shows exactly where the cue ball will travel.
- Shoot: press and hold anywhere on the table to charge the power meter, then release to strike. A longer hold means a harder hit; a quick tap is a gentle nudge. Release with almost no power to cancel the shot.
- Keyboard: the left/right arrow keys fine-tune your aim, hold spacebar to charge, and release it to shoot.
- Re-rack: the โบ button resets the table and your shot counter any time.
Tips
Start with a solid break: aim dead-center at the rack and use near-full power to scatter the balls โ a good break often sinks a ball outright. After that, think one shot ahead: position the cue ball so your next shot is easy, not just the current one. Gentle shots beat wild ones when a ball sits near a pocket. Corner pockets are bigger targets than the side pockets, so route your shots toward the corners when you can. Watch the cue ball after contact โ it keeps rolling, and a scratch (cue ball in a pocket) adds a penalty shot, so leave yourself a safe landing zone.
Scoring
Every stroke counts as one shot, and scratching the cue ball adds one penalty shot on top. Clear the table in 10 shots or fewer to earn the Pool Shark crown, 16 or fewer for Sharp Shooter status. The game tracks your shots and potted balls live at the top of the table โ chase your personal best with the re-rack button.
